I finally finished watching Lawrence of Arabia…I’ll admit it right off the bat, movies this long make me glad I can watch them in the comfort of my home with the ability to hit the old pause button when the situation calls for it. The darn movie’s over three hours long but ultimately it’s a good watch. I don’t know too much about the historical background to the title character but that’s not why I watched it. I like the psychological arc that played out in the movie. Lawrence starts out as this quiet and neurotically insecure staff officer who literally worked in the basement of the headquarters building and over time he ends up becoming the leader of an entire army. And in the process you see how he deals with the stresses of leading an Arab army. You can see how the stress of combat mixed with the effects of dealing with the inherent cultural differences (British vs. Arabian) exacerbated by the fact that he seemed to feel out of sorts dealing with what it meant to be a soldier. Very effective mix really.
